Best of 2003: Rules Of Attraction
Manchester Online has named Rules of Attraction as one of the best films released in 2003. Here's what they had to say:...bent the rules of film-making and found an authentic and strangely compelling way of telling its Bret Easton Ellis-derived story. It was, of course, too challenging to do much in the way of box-office business despite boasting one of the better advertising campaigns of the year.

That said, the film of TROA was actually appalling. It missed the point of the novel being in the 80s by placing it in the 90s and tried to make uy sympathize with the characters, a dangerous thing to try and instigate in any Ellis adaptation. Let's just get over it people and wait for the next book.

The recognition for "Rules of Attraction" is well-deserved. Although I read "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho," I was not aware that Bret Easton Ellis written "The Rules of Attraction" 'till mid-way into the movie when somebody mentioned it to me. Nevertheless, the film, I think did an incredible job of adapting Ellis' pomo/fragmented/sharp direct observational style onto screen. Rather than focusing purely plot, the director, the cinematographers and the actors too seemed also intent on conveying and retaining the unique Ellis style. Very innovative techniques such as backward motion, split screen, and a psychedellic imagery overload in middle of the movie. Must see it to experience it.
