    Lunar Park

Lunar Park. Thats the title of the upcoming Bret Easton Ellis book according to my still anonymous source. Here's the rest of the most recent tidbits:
His book has been read by his agent and about a dozen others...and the word that was used most often was, "Masterpiece"....and the name of his self-proclaimed lifes work?......."Lunar Park"

yeah this stuff has smelled of BS.

Lunar Park? Since most of Ellis' books are sorta biographical, I'd assume there'd be some connection, so unless Ellis is suddenly fascinated with the Bagdad Zoo, the best connection would be Joe Strummer lyrics. Which aint too far off the title of Less than Zero, but still...I ain't buyin it

To me, it's not a matter of buying into whether that's really the title. It's more a case of wondering if the book is really that close to being published. The Glamorama film is a great example of how rumors get started (the cast list comes to mind) and end up circulating rampantly as if they were gospel. Anonymous sources make me particularly skeptical, too.

Just on the Glamorama film - Is it still in production? Roger Avary says nothing about it on his website and IMDB still says it's in production for 2004. So unless they have already started filming there's no way it's going to be released this year.
    And what happened to Gliterati?

"Glamorama" is not in production (as far as being filmed, etc.). I don't know what stage of pre-production it's in, but I get the impression Avary's having a tough time getting financial backing for the movie, which is understandable considering its subject matter and how it fits in our post-9/11 society. Needless to say, the film will NOT be out in 2004.

As for "Glitterati," it's my understanding that it's been finished pretty much as long as the "Rules" film has; it just didn't get released on the "Rules" DVD like so many fans had hoped. I don't think it was ever intended to be something that would be released in theaters and called a film. I think it was always considered a supplementary sort of thing: an experiment to bridge the gap between "Rules" and "Glamorama."

I'm aware of the "bridging the gap" idea, but that doesn't answer if or when I'm ever going to see it.
Avary talked about a special edition rules of attraction with deleted scenes etc, maybe it'll be on that? But when's that coming out?

Luna Park is an open-air restaurant & bar in Union Square Park in NYC that tries to be trendy, which means that they keep you waiting for a table for no reason and give you an attitude if you don't dress like you're going to a club. Not that this has anything to do with the book, but it's the kind of place I picture characters in Glamorama maybe hanging out at if they fall on harder times. Just a side note there. (P.S. Yes Tony, girls read Ellis)

As to whether "Glitterati" will ever be released in any capacity is anyone's guess. A special edition of "Rules" doesn't seem likely to happen. While sales of the DVD did fairly well from what I understand, I don't think it was anywhere near big enough to warrant a re-release as a special edition. We can hope that "Glamorama" will finally get filmed and that "Glitterati" will get put on that DVD.

To the person that is "In the know", what have you heard about the release date? Only Salinger's return to publishing could top my exitement for the buzz on Ellis's new arrival. I heard something about October?

hey bookthread, I have no idea what you were getting at with your first post, but thanks for the information.
Unfortunately, the internet is full of false information, especially regarding entertainment gossip, so excuse my refusal to believe you. This is about the 4th title I've heard for his new book, so until I see a press release I'm not buying any of it.

    [13] On Sep-13-2004, bookthread wrote:

He told me it was going to be as late as October of next year...I will try to gleam more info the next time I see him. I have not seen him in a couple of weeks. The book is done so I assume it is going through the usual editing process.

And by "he" I'm sure you mean Ellis.
Great, another internet nerd pretending to be best friends with a celebrity.
    How old are you? 12?

As far as Gliterati, it was supposed to be extra material on the DVD, the uncut version is allready out in France (I think it is) and will hopefully find its way here one day. And as far as Glamorama, if i understood it right, he is still finishing the script, so do not expect a movie until earliest late next year.

And the title Lunar Park, maybe it is the title, but a working title (which means that it is the title but will change closer to the realease), after all he lives a couple of blocks from the place so maybe it is a name that stuck, who knows.

Anyways, these were my 10 cents.

Just on the rules of attraction dvd... It's true that there was a 2 disc french edition, but the extras were minimal. The only thing that's missing is a 15 minute interview with Roger Avary as far as I can tell. No Gliteratti.
The Australian version of the DVD is uncut too, but by uncut I mean the only significant changes I could see were the suicide scene being slightly extended and the drunken rape continuing after the guy vomitted.
I really want to see all the deleted scenes, such as the cafeteria and Patrick Bateman's cameo. If only there was a way to see it without resorting to robbing Avary's house and stealing the print...

hmmm...did I say I was best friends with him? nay....I have given you this info to help "him"....create a buzz about the book. I do not consider him a celebrity by the way. Good point on the Lunar Park, it may be a working title. That had not occured to me.

so, are those Bateman rumours true ?

Whether or not it is a working title or the real thing, the book is very real. I was given a copy of the manuscript and am halfway through it right now. The main character is Bret, involved in the plot like Charlie Kaufman in Adaptation. As far as I know, it won't be out for another year.

I read it- I work for a film company. All I'll say is I normally am not an Ellis fan, but I loved this. It is, as of now, called Lunar Park, it is an old fashioned horror story, Bret Easton Ellis is the central character in it, playing a reformed version of himself trying to live out the suburban dream, and it is very very good.

I don't know the release date, but it's obviously making the rounds at movie studios so it's finished.

Just checked in...I see there is some validation to what I have been saying. I don't have any more scoops at this moment, but someone who I know who has read the first 100 pages can not stop talking about it. "far and away the best he has ever produced"

I finished reading Lunar Park today. Regarding the person's comment above who works at a film company, what they said is incorrect. There's nothing old-fashioned about this story, and BEE is not playing a reformed version of himself, whatever that means. He is the main character and the first 30 pages or so is nothing but biographical information on him, and then the actual story begins where the bio leaves off. The story takes us on a supernatural haunted house joyride with a disconnected upper class family and a little girl's extremely creepy stuffed animal. Bateman makes a return, and Bret the narrator speaks in a post-Fight Club narration of an unsolved mystery. This feels very different than his other novels and is much more mature, even bittersweet by the touching end. Finishing the last page reminds me again that I wish BEE would write faster. Getting material this good so infrequently is blessing and a curse. I'm going to be letting this one settle for a while.
