I found this article a long while ago, which I thought was fantastic. I'll also have to try and dig up an article that I found that was completly opposite to the below, when I have the time.

This is probably going to seem like a stupid question, but are the killings in American Psycho actually taking place, or are they a figment of Patrick's imagination? I just assumed that they were really taking place, but the confusion with Patrick's lawyer at the end made me think otherwise.

I'm pretty sure that they were taking place in Bateman's imagination. Here's why, although some may say im splitting hairs.
Remember the scene in which Bateman killed the gay man and his dog? Bateman says that he felt himself crush the trachea of the dog, but then says that the dog was yelping around and licking its own intestines after he had sliced the dog's stomach open.
If your trachea is crushed, you can not make noises like that.

i think i like the book a lot more if the killings are in patrick's imagination...

... i think this book makes a powerful statement, and this makes me feel like a bad fan, but strangely this is my least favorite ellis book. i think it's the most redundant. there were honestly so many more examples of his insanity than there needed to be. and it had the least explanation of all ellis books as to why the protagonist was so detached. not that i have any right to criticize ellis, ever.

it could be an age thing. i am closer to the ages of the rules of attraction characters, and i therefore understand all the humor and honesty in that book to the fullest extent. maybe when i'm older i'll enjoy american psycho more?

this is very off topic, but why is lunar park being released hard cover? strange.

    glamorama was as well

    what's strange about that?

Suicide wrote "ellis answers this question in his next book".

Well... Ellis the fictional character answers this question in Lunar Park -- not Ellis the author. Wouldn't you agree? ;-)

what did the hard cover of glamorama look like?

    [11] On Apr-26-2005, suicide wrote:

the hardcover of Glamorama has a white jacket with holes in it so you can see celeb's faces that are printed on the actual cover.

and I agree with the above remark about Ellis the character, not neccesarily Ellis the real person

Honestly, isn't Ellis pretty close to being a fictional character anyway?

Does anyone know if Bret Easton Ellis is gay? Just wondering...

I just finished the book the other night. I was wondering, during the chase scene, why did it switch to third person? Just to show his detachment or what?

    [15] On Apr-30-2005, Tom wrote:

I would say he's definitely been bi-curious at some point as that is a repeated theme in his books.

See the end of the "this is not an exit" documentary : "we all love boys"
Anyway, I think BEE is trying to keep his private life really private, which is good because he could use that so easily. We'll probably learn more with LP.

Actually, you will be more confused about Bret's "private life" after reading Lunar Park than you were before.

So very true. Figuring out whats real and what isn't is half the fun of the first portion of the book.

hey, i was just reading through the posts. i just wanted to spread my theories on some of the stuff in AP.
First, for the killings being in Pat's head. How do you explain the taxi driver near the end? And everyones always confusing everyone in this book, so I'm sure Paul Owen was actually killed.
Also, i think Ellis switched to 3rd person during the chase to show how Pat's mind works like a movie.

AP was one of my favorite novels. To appreciate it, you have to find this joke funny:

Q: Why did the dead baby cross the road?

A: Because it was stapled to the chicken.

    [21] On Jun-08-2005, Andy wrote:

What exactly is included in the "This Is Not An Exit" video?
    (In regard to AP)
Bret, would you also consider doing a new section on this video and it's content?
I'm new to this site, and I know the video is several years old, so if this is old news to everyone I apologize...

I recently wrote an essay on American Psycho, interpreting it somewhat differently than most people. I would welcome feedback:
