Lunar Park On eBay
Advance reader copies of Lunar Park are showing up on eBay. As I write this, there are 6 available, including one where the seller spelled Bret's name with 2 T's. These are apparently bound copies, and a couple of different covers are being displayed - hopefully neither of which are the final version. [Thanks to Matthew for the heads-up]

They're just copyproofs... It's unlikely that any first edition will have the exact same cover. But who really cares anyway? It's a book, the text is what matters. I'm sure I don't have to mention the old saying about books and covers.

I kind of agree with Matthew but I actually think the copyproof cover looks pretty cool. I mean it could be worst just as I guess it could be better. Not a bad start though. I was nervous about this book but the more we talk about it I actually think it might be good. Of course we'll all see if we are right once we read it. But you know what there is so much shit in the fiction world right now Lunar Park looks like the only thing worth reading.

I hadn't thought about that, but I agree. And it's worth the waiting, I guess.

i hate to say this, but so far, i'm disappointed with the book. the book is much more "commercial" (read - linear, plotted, and IMO, dry) than his previous works. almost as if written by another author. probably heavily edited.
it still has glimpses of genius but it's much different from his previous works, and much more "accessible," which makes me sad. was hoping for another "american psycho" or "glamorama" and so far it seems I got something much more garden variety.
having said that, being an ellis work, it's still fabulous. just not as fabulous as i had hoped.

Firstly: I don't care if you have the book (lucky you!) but don't tell me what is happening in it or even talk about what is different and new in the book. I also see no point in posting it on this website. Do you realize that you are soiling it for other people. What is the reason you are posting it on the website? Is it tick and piss us off? I hope not.
Secondly: I am sure Lunar Park is different from Ellis but you know what I think maybe that is good. We need something new and fresh from Ellis not his usuall Ellis formula. I still love his blank effect writing but I hope he has more to say than the same things to say. I just hope the book is original. I need to read something I that I would never read from anybody else.

Jesus! Calm down, everyone. I DID post a spoiler warning, and I was very careful not to give away any plot points. I was basically just posting my opinions of the tone and style of the book. You don't need to read my messages if you don't want to know my feelings on them. I am simply excited to talk about the book after waiting SEVEN YEARS, and thought this might be the place to do it. If it's not, is there anyone here who is not quite so touchy who can point me in another direction for similar discussion? Thanks much.
PS bret - what did you think of the book overall, compared to his earlier works? if you'd rather not post here, I'd love to discuss, and you can email me at the address above. I often forget that usually BEE's books take awhile to sink in and I get more and more from them after repeated readings, so I will see how it all digests the second time.

the reason i am posting this here is not to "piss" anyone off...but because i found some discussion here by people who had read the book, and was excited to find a place where i thought i could actually engage in discussions about the book with other ellis fans. i am pretty disappointed, and surprised, at the level of hostility of the responses here.

Betty, I think the reason you're facing so much hostility is not so much that you're a woman, as you suggested on another thread, but that we've waited 7 years for this book to come out too and don't want it ruined by some stupid spoiler 2 months before it finally comes out. Crowded India Cities Face Conflict With Cows
By DAVID GUTTENFELDER, Associated Press Writer
Sat May 14, 8:35 PM ET
NEW DELHI - In largely Hindu India, where many animals are revered as sacred, the cow has always held a special place.
"If someone were to ask me what the most important outward manifestation of Hinduism was, I would suggest that it was the idea of cow protection," Mohandas K. Gandhi, India's great teacher of nonviolence, once wrote.
But as urban India grows more crowded, cattle are an increasing problem.
In New Delhi, which 13 million people share with an estimated 28,000 cows, the problems are legion: Wandering cows clog streets and cause road accidents. Herds of cows spread trash and disease as they tear open plastic garbage bags in search of food and leave trails of dung. They sometimes trample people to death.
So in early May, the New Delhi high court ordered the removal of stray cattle from the city's streets.
Fanning out across the capital, city workers backed by riot police began roping and hauling cows off in trucks to a suburban pound. Some people applauded. Others, who venerate the cows or make their livelihood by milking the stray animals at unregistered dairies, protested.
Days after the roundup began, cows could still be seen all across the city.
Gentle respect for the lives of all animals has been a principle belief of Hinduism since its emergence some three milleniums ago.
But the sacred cow has a special role in Hindu mythology. Some trace cow worship back to Lord Krishna, who is said to have first appeared as a cowherd and protector of cattle. Several other gods also lived for a time as cows, and the animals remain a powerful symbol of the religion.
Hindu nationalist political parties have often used cows to further their political goals, and one raises money by making traditional medicines and cosmetics from key cow products — butter, milk, curd, urine and dung.
Cows are also protected by law in India.
Free-roaming cattle share public spaces with humans. They loiter in the entries of Hindu temples, nap on the medians of highways and mingle among vendors in city markets.>>>>>>
Imagine my surprise when instead of that, I find Betty the Housewife and the Bathhouse Boys quoting the new book word for word. It's really starting to get old. So if we could please stop with the spoilers and get back on the topic of rabid cows spreading trash and disease in India, I think we'd all be getting along a lot better.
[28] On May-16-2005, SirA.D. wrote:
I'm completely aghast. Rabid cows...
Okay,
First of all, I apologize since I didn't mean to be rude. As a matter of fact I did not read the spoiler (thanks for warning) but I thought that in this thread we could discuss what we expected and anticipated about LP, not what was actually in the book. I know we've all been waiting so long, but I still don't like spoilers. My opinion is that the title of this thread might not be accurate enough. -> Bret, why not create a special LP/spoiler inside/thread where those who have read the novel can discuss it more in depth,or a LP speculations thread for those of us who haven't read it?
And just, y'know, chill down... ;)

I'm not going to create a spoiler thread yet because I don't want to have a bunch of advance info about the book on the site. When the release gets closer, I'll probably do it though.
I'm not sure what all the hubub is about spoilers here though. Betty gave a warning, but didn't actually post a spoiler - she gave a general opinion of what she had read so far and asked a question about an impression she had gotten from the novel. No plot points, certainly no direct citations from the book.
This just seems like a big deal has been made over nothing.

So if things get out of hand (like this thread), then posts can be censored if necessary, and unprofessional individuals such as Big In Japan (and posts by him/her) can be removed entirely.
