Final Lunar Park Cover
The 'moon cover' is apparently the official hardcover for Lunar Park. I also received an email (thanks Jamie) that said the ARC's with this cover have a notation on the back that it was designed by Chip Kidd. The picture itself is called The Ocean of Storms and the Known Sea from Full Moon by Michael Light.I still don't think this is a very good cover for the book, but it is growing on me.

Chip Kidd is the industry gold standard and I really admire and respect him and his work which is why it pains me to say that this cover is a substandard piece of shit. Sorry, but Lunar Park deserves much better.

I love the font and the color of the font and how it glows, but the moon part is vert flat and just doesnt match the font. And how much more obvious can you get, 'its got the word lunar in it so we have a picture of the moon'. geesh. i may have to buy the UK version!

Does anybody know how long it takes before the book is translated in other languages? (In Dutch)

It has a picture of the moon not simply because of a word in it's title, nor is the word 'Lunar' in the title arbitrarily. Wait to judge till you read the book.

it'd be a hard book to find a perfect cover for. I like this well enough.

How about a house in suburbia with a sillouetted family shot from behind with a dog on one side and a Furby on the other.
Maybe we'll end up with something like that for the paperback editions.

Don't judge a book by the cover...don't judge a cover by the title...
Ok that was corny. It looks fine. I love the font; the moon thing, eh. Overall, it's still exciting, MORE B.E.E.!!! :)

it's really pissing me off how people have read this already and discuss it so noncholantly... (in a i'm really jealous way)... can somebody at least write their own review??

This book's title -- Lunar Park -- has planted a solid image for the front cover in my mind. I picture a view of a swimming pool situated in the LA hills, its water reflecting a dim half moon, sinister shadows creeping up from the bottom, all photographed at a sinister angle. The tile of this book is absolutely cool and compelling, yet this cover looks like a mass-market sci-fi paperback.
Then again, almost everyone -- readers and critics -- disapproved of the original cover of The Great Gatsby, which has become an iconic image of that literary age.
Time shall decide . . .

that cover is so blatantly unexpected, un-bret, and, well, bad.. that chip kidd and bret easton ellis must have known what they were doing when they picked it.
i'm not saying it was made to be deliberately bad, but bret easton ellis would not choose to put bright blue squares around the letters (think about TROA cover - black and white, just half of the backboard of a bed) without.. thinking it through.
yeah, the cover sucks, but i'm sure such a suck cover was not picked at the last minute.

Now that we know Chip Kidd designed the cover, all of a sudden people are changing there minds?
Hey, if you don't like it, you don't like it...I like the letters and colors, but the moon looks like it was pasted from photoshop.(It's taken very literal which leads me to believe after we've read the book, it will have some added meaning...

I've read the book four times since I got it last October and -- nope! There is no "added meaning" to be found. It's just unbelievably weak. Poor choice, guys.

I just finished the book and it is very clear why it has a moon on the cover, as well as the flashing strobe effect of the letters.
The book is outstanding!

DON'T READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T READ LUNAR PARK PLEASE!
The Lunar Park and Bret Easton Ellis lettering on the cover has a strobe effect because of the sconces in the novel.Remember as he walks through the house the lights flicker on and then subside? It is a small touch that Chip Kidd used in the design.
I don't have the book in front of me now(I don't have a page number for you) but there is a passage very early in the novel that says "The final sentence in the book and cover will only have meaning to my son."
His screen saver on the computer, the theme of his room, stars on his ceiling and planets hanging. The many references to the moon by Bret thoughout the book and the words Lunar Park written in his Dad's ashes.
That doesn't mean I'm crazy about the cover, but it answers questions I had about the images on it...though everyone sees things differently through their eyes as they read a book.

I haven't read the book, but obviously it has numerous "lunar" references - which of course justifies not only the name of the novel but also the cover.
But isn't the picture of an actual moon on the cover a bit too obvious? As the author's work is as far as self-explanatory as it can, I would've expected something a bit more subtle...

it's only one word written in the ashes and in the picture his son leaves of the moon. But what is the word??? did i miss it? and sure lunar but why park?? is there some reference to a park that i am missing?
