Two Brets - Official US Lunar Park Site

The official US website for Lunar Park has been launched: Two Brets.

There is lots of goodies there including some bio info, an interview, an excert from the book, and a game whereby you can help re-write a 'lost' BEE story. There is also a tidbit that Bret may be working on a follow-up to Less Than Zero.

I've also been informed that there is more info on Jayne Dennis out there. Jayne is Bret's wife in the novel.

A follow up to Less Than Zero? Yeah, great. Nothing screams "over-the-hill burnout" quite like trying desperately to capitalize on an idea one had at age 20.

Lunar Park is going to be fantastic.

A follow up to Less Than Zero is the best thing I've heard in a long time. No other character in any Ellis novel has been more interesting to me than Clay. If it's for real, I'm jumping up and down, here.

Also, I'd like to point out that Lunar Park's release date is August 16th, which happens to be my 22nd birthday, and somewhat of a minor Ellis reference in general.

The Sequel: Clay and Blair are married, childless and live in Topanga among the aging hippies, former celebrity animals and washed up child stars. Trent visits often. He is now a woman. While Blair is away at rehab (the twenty-first time in time in twenty years) for bulimia, meth, or middle age, Clay has an affair with a former Buckley student half his age. It all ends very, very badly.

That is probably literally true. The main road through town is a twisty perilous (often two lane) thing (like virtually all the roads over the santa monica mountains), rich in homicidal drunks, and often used for chase scenes in 1970s and 80s TV shows (this incidentally is one of the strange things about growing up in LA - much of what one sees [or at least used to see] on TV is also somewhere you pass on the way to the beach, or Disneyland, or your mother's guru).

Honestly, that was one of the poorest insults ever directed at me (and not just because of its solecism). Surely you could have done better.

    I'm done.

I would appreciate it if we kept the disscusion to whatever Bret's topic header is.The guy puts alot of his time into this site.

When Lunar Park is released this nonsense has to stop.

I agree. This is an excellent site; the only one I can make out for BEE news and developments.

A forum would be nice though; where we can put our own topics up. This is probably why people post irrelevant stuff.

For instance; i would like to know if anyone wants to sell their proof of lunar park to me?

I'm not v well versed in all this but if someone would give Bret a hand in making a secure forum i'm sure he (and everyone else) would much appreciate it.

anyway, not complaining. thanks for the site. Like I say it's the best around.

I like Less Than Zero just the way it is. I do not desire to know what ever happened to Clay. I feel if Bret writes a sequal he will destroy what Less Than Zero represents. I do not mind him writing about another group of generation X kids facing the facts of life in the 21st century. I do mind him writing sequal to a book which in my view has a good enough ending. I would even consider not to read Less Than Zero 2 if it was published just because I love Less Than Zero 1 that much.

    [32] On Jun-16-2005, James wrote:

Mitch, I understand what you're saying but don't you think that perhaps all of Bret's books since LTZ have been 'sequels' ?

Though not linear (remember the 'facts even when beaded on a string quotation from the beginning of Rules of Attraction?) they all form pieces of a puzzle.

In my opinion Bret's work exposes and subverts the artificiality of the sequel, dipping back and forth between times, people and events.

    What do you think ?

James, I didn't really think about it that way. I guess Ellis does not recycle his ideas but keeps on going deeper and deeper into the characters life, you're right, going back and forth. I admit though I don't like that he tries to connect characters together. Just becasue I don't believe people are connected. But then again in Ellis' work are the characters actually connected?

For example in Rules Of Attraction all the character are connected with each other even though they don't know it.

    [38] On Jun-17-2005, James wrote:

    Ah. Gotcha.
I agree that these connections aren't necessarily "realistic," but I see them as emphasising them as a creation, i.e. revelling in their artificiality.

I don't want to go too far down this path because they are, at the same time, characters that breathe, but when Patrick Bateman appears in Glamourama just for a minute it is as if BEE does it for the sake of doing it; because he can.

This is, after all, his fictional world; he is its creator and its master and by perpetual allusion to the length and span of this world he pushes us further and further into the fiction; down the rabbit hole as it were.
