Lunar Park, The Movie?
The Washington Square News has an interview with Ellis. When asked who he'd like to play the role of Bret Easton Ellis if Lunar Park were ever adapted for film, Bret had this to say:I'd give it Jake Gyllenhaal - no, I'm kidding. They've offered it to all the actors my age. They offered it to Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp. And everyone turned it down. The only person who didn't was Benicio del Toro, who actually began running around the studios saying, "I wanna star in this."Not sure if thats all in jest or not. I haven't heard anything about the book being optioned for film yet.

of all e llis' books, this would work the least as a movie. it wouldn't work at all, it would be awful, i can't picture any way that the few good elements of this book would transcend the campy horror movie it would become. t hey would get lost.

Robert Downey Jr. or Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be better choices anyhow.

Last I checked, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp and that Benicio guy weren't directors... as far as I know, they're only actors. I'm guessing that the process of bringing Lunar Park to the big screen would very early on probably involve a writer/director with a very definite vision for it convincing one of those aforementioned stars to be in it.

I think Vincent D'Onofrio would make a great Bret.

Benicio Del Toro is a director...or at least he will be. He's supposed to be directing the film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "Rum Diary"...starring himself and Johnny Depp. Yay! Better idea than Joel Schumacher adapting Kerouac's "On the Road"...but what can you do. I think because of the Charlie Kaufman-esque style of "Lunar Park" that Spike Jonze (director of "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation")is one of the only people who I could see directing a "Lunar Park" movie...other than him I could kind of see David Fincher, based on how well he did "Fight Club"...but it'd be too dark. Brian DePalma might be a good choice...I don't know...any other choices?

At his event in Dallas two nights ago, Ellis said that the role of himself in a possible "Lunar Park" film was offered to the likes of Crusie, Norton, and Pitt, but they all refused. The only one who wanted to play Ellis was Benicio. He said he was not joking, and that a film adaptation was "not going to happen."
He did mention to me something about a screenplay for the Informers, which I thought was interesting. He also said that he wouldn't be doing anything supernatural anymore (like vampires). He told the audience that he really wanted to write a novel about how Sean Bateman has become "a revenously promiscuous homosexual." I am not joking.

obviously the idea would never take off due to hollywood money reasons, and probably because he wouldn't want to, and he's not an actor and all that,
BUT
surely the most ideal thing would for bret to play "bret" himself. no?!

I just put down 'Lunar Park'.
I devoured it in the usual day and a half of marathon reading/stimulant binging that typically accompanies (celebrates?) a Bret Easton Ellis work. Dispensing with most of the light side of the dark side riddling 'Less Than Zero', 'Rules of Attraction', and 'Glamorama', 'Lunar Park' left me feeling oddly touched. Being a "reformed sceneater" with a young son myself I couldn't help but ride right along on this maddening mindfuck of a novel. Certain passages in the book did not seem quite as focused as Ellis' previous works evenly boasted. Still, that same sweaty incoherence lent to what evolved through the span of a few hundred pages into a new (more mature? -gag - )voice for my favorite living American author.

This is completely out of context, but Bret was on a local Los Angeles morning radio show this week (103.1) and although I came in mid-interview, I could swear he said LUNAR PARK was becoming a movie. The conversation was all very matter of fact.
Then again, has Bret ever given an honest interview? For all I know that's not even Bret on the novel's dust jacket.
