Ellis Writing Screenplay For 'Downers Grove'
We may have to wait awhile for Imperial Bedrooms to be published, but it looks like there's a good reason.
Bret Easton Ellis will be writing the screenplay for Downers Grove.
The independently financed project centers on a paranoid high school senior for whom graduating has become a matter of life or death. The novel was published in 1999 by Michael Hornburg.
I've never read anything by Michael Hornburg before. Any of you have thoughts on the Downers Grove novel and how it might translate onto the big screen?

I'd just like to see some more of Ellis's work. I guess The Frog King will be good enough, whenever that comes out.

I don't really like this. I looked at the book on Amazon and a whole lot of people did not like this book. I just don't want BEE's name associated with a horrible movie... I hope he pulls off a hit. I have been really excited for Imperial Bedrooms since it's been on this website and I am very disappointed that he is taking on another side project. As Alex wrote, it is understandable, but I really want to read this follow up to LTZ. I am thankful, though, for him being a little more in the public eye than he has been in the past ten years. It's nice to actually have news about him. So whatever BEE does, I support him. And THIS WEBSITE. You rock!

Book wasn't very great, maybe BEE can work his magic on this one, the plot has potential

Sometimes as a writer you need a side project to distract the mind. It is not surprising Ellis has picked a "trash" book to adapt. But, you know, I really doubt anything will come out of this. I have just about given up hope that Frog King is ever going to hit the screens.

I would not worry about BEE associating his name with a horrible movie. If you ever saw the movie version of Less Than Zero, you would realize that he doesn't care about his great books developing into horrible movies. I would say Less Than Zero and Rules of Attractions are both horrible movies compared to the books. I don't mean to sound cliche when saying that, but the personality of the characters in both of these movies are total opposites of those characters in the books.
I am a little worried about a follow up to Less Than Zero. That is the only book that has ever been able to capture my attention, and I don't want a sub-par sequel to ruin that.

i hate this book when i read it in middle school and i think i'd hate it even more reading it now. i think this is soooo beneath bret and i really wish he would drop out of it or something. the worst thing about that book was that it was one of those adolescent coming-of-age bullshitters written by an old guy who knew nothing about the area or the people he were portraying.

Off topic, but did anyone find McGinniss's Ellis imitation in The Delivery Man distracting?

He did an imitation of him in the book? I've got to read that.

So I live in Downers Grove, IL and was wondering if anyone knows if this is something that is just in the works right now or if they have started filming. Something is going on around town, but all the info I find online just says that he has agreed to write the screenplay, nothing about filming. I read the book long ago and remember hearing that the author wanted it adapted into a movie. He is the same author that wrote Bongwater, which was later adapted into a movie as well starring Luke Wilson.

First of all contrary to what everyone else thinks i believe that downers grove is one of the best books i have ever read. I think trying to get it on the big screen is a great idea. This book is so original and would make a great indie movie.

not a particularly good book - but it might make a good movie.
