    New Ellis Short Story

Bret wrote a short story for Nowness.com. This has apparently been up since June - which shows just how behind I am in all things Ellis. (I wish this story had a title, it would be alot easier to talk about)

... exclusively for NOWNESS, he creates a portrait of an obsessive character in the throes of post-relationship drama - once again capturing the neuroses that are so ineluctably a feature of our modern lives.

Are we absolutely sure this is legitimate? It seems unlike anything he's ever written, and not just in terms of content: stylistically it feels a bit off to me.

If it weren't legit, I don't think it'd still be up. I read this when it was first posted, and I actually really like it, for what it is. I wish Ellis would write more short stories in between novels, and perhaps compile another collection someday.

I like that he's dropped the first-person-present-tense which he's always used. No longer resembling Raymond Carver, now he sounds more like a straight story teller. I recently began reading work by John O'Hara, whom Ellis quotes at the opening of Lunar Park, and this piece reminds me of his style. He used to mine the thought processes of his characters. Now he just tells us what they do and how they feel.
